Blueberries - and apples, pears and plums in season
Innisvale Farm is a hundred year old farm originally owned by Colonel Rice. Situated north-east of Duncan near Maple Bay, there are 80 acres of forest, pastures and the blueberries; these grow in a six acre former lake bed providing a field of peat that gives the berries their delicious flavour. The farmhouse is a classic early B.C. building surrounded by gardens, sited to view Mt. Prevost, just above Richards Creek and below the forest trail to the blueberries.
Our Blueberries
Our berries are grown on a six acre lake bed of peat. That's why our customers say they are the best berries they have eaten, and keep coming back for more each year.
We do not use any pesticides, and we do not recommend washing the berries. If you do, you should do so at the last minute before eating, as washing removes the natural preservatives.
For freezing, we suggest placing the case in the freezer for at least one day and then pouring the berries directly into freezer bags from the box; two five-pound bags will just work. This avoids handling and is much easier.
Opening Times
The blueberry season is usually from mid July through August, but can extend longer. We are open seven days a week, please call ahead to confirm our current hours of operation. We sometimes will close for bad weather or if we are out of stock. Call ahead to confirm if U-picking is open, or to place an order. - 250 746-7143.
For U-picking, it is best to wait until at least 9:30AM, as the field may be wet due to the cool nights. You will need to bring all your supplies for picking (small buckets and containers for transporting home); we are unable to supply any under the circumstances.
Sales
We sell our berries in ten-pound cases. Current pricing is $60.00 for the ten-pound case. We occasionally sell frozen berries in five-pound freezer bags for $30.00.
We also have U-picking for those who would like to experience the calm of picking their own berries at their leisure. The price for these berries is $4.00 per pound. Children are welcome, but must remain under direct supervision.
Directions
From the Trans Canada highway, Go East on Herd Rd. (across from the Lake Cowichan highway) about 6 km. past the Raptor Centre and turn left on Rice Rd. just past the stone gateway for North Haven. Follow the winding road to the end about 600 m.
From Crofton, take Osborne Bay Rd. to Herd Rd, and turn right (West). The first right turn is Rice Rd, less than 1 km from Osborne Bay at Farmer Ben's egg warehouse. Turn right on Rice and follow the winding road to the end about 600 m.
